Following the news that Netflix had acquired its very first Nigerian movie; Lionheart, there was quite a frenzy about the content of the film. Why Netflix was interested in a movie coming from this part of the world was the question on everyone’s mind. After seeing Lionheart on Netflix, I was really fired up to about this review. It took a lot to tame my enthusiasm so I could watch the film again objectively. Yes, I saw it twice within the space of two days just so I could be certain of my verdict in my buzz review of Lionheart . I do not underrate it in any way.
In recent times, Nollywood film production has been at the top of its game with quality movies like King of Boys, Chief daddy, Before 30 and so on. Lionheart is yet another reason why the attention of Nigerians would be turned towards the Nollywood film industry.
Lionheart depicts the reason why Nigeria and its people are still regarded as the giants of Africa. The film delves into the tenacity and the spirit to fight on despite many negative challenges.
With the breathtaking scenery from the eastern city of Enugu to the northern city of Kano, the production team really took their time to visually boast of the beauty of Nigeria’s landscapes. The Entertainment Network; TEN, did a splendid job at breathing life into the tentative creative production from the lead actress and film scriptwriter; Genevieve Nnaji.
Pete Edochie, together with other veteran acts like Onyeka Onwenu, Peter Okoye, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Nkem Owoh and many more, were also a part of the secret formula that made film worthwhile. Genevieve Nnaji was able to paint the unity in diversity that abounds within Nigeria.
More so, through language, music, cultural representation, values and ethnical beliefs of people from various tribes, this film was able to preach about the progress that could be accomplished through unification.
Regardless of the different areas that could have been improved upon, there is definitely a lot of work to be done before the Nollywood movies can be compared to the other top-ranked movies out there.
Above all, LionHeart is a goosebumpy type of film. The film promises to revive your faith in Nigeria and its people throughout its entire run time…and possibly beyond.

Official Synopsis of Lionheart:
When her father falls ill, Adaeze steps up to run the family business–alongside her uncle–and prove herself in a male-dominated world.
Seun, I personally think that the film was great but had a few pacing issues. Asides that, being a directorial debut for Genevieve it’s a brilliant start for her.
Yeah, it did. That is why I hinted that it still isn’t Oscar worthy. But it surpasses the average Nollywood movies we are all used to.
