Not everyone knows a lot about Marvel Comics and Spiderman. However, for most of us, the names Peter Parker and Mary Jane (MJ) easily ring a bell from the cartoons we watched on STV while growing up, to the comic books and the 2002 hit movie about the neighborhood superhero. Newly released Spider-man: Homecoming however doesn’t feature Spiderman’s famous love interest MJ Or does it? Did We Really Get A First Glimpse Of Mary Jane In Spider-Man: Homecoming?
Towards the end of the movie, a new student (with an acid tongue); Michelle played by Zendaya, was nominated as captain of Peter Parker’s Quiz Bowl team. But Michelle doesn’t just accept the role; casually, she requests that her teammates call her by her nickname MJ. For a lot fans of the boy with the red and blue suit, your first guess would be that this Spider-Man: Homecoming reveal implies that Michelle would be the new Mary Jane Watson and would therefore play a more significant role in the sequels to the Homecoming.
If you did, you are probably partly correct, and also partly wrong. We do expect Michelle to play a more significant in subsequent releases of Spider-Man, however, we can also categorically tell you that she is not Mary Jane. Marvel’s Kevin Feige commented on the actress’ role following the film’s premiere
“She’s not Mary Jane Watson. She never was Mary Jane Watson. She was always this new high school character, Michelle.” Feige further said that “There are big reveals in the movie. That’s not one of them.”
So, while you can look forward to seeing Michelle in subsequent versions of Spider-Man, don’t be surprised if Mary Jane also shows up. Sony’s Amy Pascal has also assured fans that the new character Michelle is a character in her own right saying “She is not going to end as being Mary Jane Watson,”
