So when the trailer for the third installment of the John Wick (John Wick: Parabellum) franchise dropped, a number of Nigerians went ballistic. I’m talking about a few husbands, your boyfriend, that movie freak etc. and you probably still don’t even know why…pfft…JJC (coman beat me). Either way, I am one of these die-hard fans, but the difference between me and every other person is that I am actually going to tell you why everyone is going crazy over the upcoming film. For lack of better words, this is all about John Wick: How the killing began.
Here’s how it all started; the John Wick series began with the 2014 American action-thriller film directed by Chad Stahelski (co-directed by David Leitch) and written by Derek Kolstad. I know what you are thinking – “lol, who are these people with names that make me want to bite my tongue?”
These brilliant men are the geniuses behind the John Wick franchise. They single-handedly kickstarted the killing spree and are the reason my article on “John Wick: How The Killing Began” exists. Chad is an American stuntman who initially worked as a stunt double on The Crow (1994) for Brandon Lee. He later went on to double for Keanu Reeves in The Matrix and its subsequent sequels where the duo developed a working relationship. Chad co-directed John Wick and John Wick: Chapter 2, and will single-handedly helm the third installment; John Wick: Parabellum.
David is a filmmaker, stunt coordinator, second unit director, stuntman, actor and producer. David has served as a stunt double for Brad Pitt five separate times and for Jean-Claude Van Damme two separate times. John Wick launched David’s career as a Director and since then, he has gone on to co-direct its sequel John Wick: Chapter Two. Since then, his solo directorial debut began with; Atomic Blonde and later Deadpool 2. David will now be helming the director’s role for Universal’s Fast and Furious spinoff; Hobbs and Shaw to be released in August 2019.
John Wick was produced by Eva Longoria and Michael Witherill, marking Chad and David’s directorial debut as a team after multiple separate credits as second-unit directors and stunt coordinators.
As of now, I am unable to confirm if David was involved in the production of John Wick: Parabellum. However, word on the street is that both directors have discussed a collaboration of Atomic Blonde and John Wick … (aye mi oo! In one lifetime! FUUUUNNNNKKKKKEEE!)
Shall we discuss the twisted plot?
John Wick’s origins began in John Wick (2014). The film was widely accepted as one of Reeves’ best performances and one of the best action films of 2014, grossing $89 million worldwide against a production budget of $20–30 million.
The film’s plot sees a major crime lord build his empire off an impossible mission he tasks John Wick (aka. Baba Yaga) with. As a legendary assassin in the making, he carries out this task to enable him to “retire” as an assassin. John wants to live a normal life with the love of his life.
However, when the crime lord’s son (Iosef Tarasov played by Alfie Allen) crosses the line by stealing John’s car – a sweet black Ford Mustang Mach 1, then kills the dog which was given to John by his dying wife (perfect f**k up). He becomes quite a handful as he finds himself on the run from John Wick (aka. their daddy) – Talk about unleashing the dragon.
Obviously, that’s a bad place to be. This ignorant youngster managed to provoke John out of retirement to seek revenge, justice or whatever you want to call it. What was the eventual outcome of that pursuit?… If you haven’t seen it by now, I don’t know what to do with you.
John Wick is such a thrilling character known for his Kung Fu techniques, Judo, etc. The relevant lesson here is that a father failed to teach an important history lesson to his son and didn’t do proper introductions. A lot of lives were lost because of this as they unleashed the beast that is John Wick. This is John Wick: How The Killing Began and now that you know, its time to catch up with the films.
