Marvel’s The Defenders is a Marvel and Netflix production scheduled to be aired on the 18th of August, 2017. The 8-episode TV series is partly directed by S.J Clarkson who serves as both director and executive producer on the same show. Clarkson however has revealed why Marvel’s Defenders won’t meet in the first episode and with good reason.
The Defenders being another Marvel TV series is the first ever major crossover event which will have heroes like Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Danny Rand aka Iron fist (Finn Jones) and Matt Murdock aka Daredevil (Charlie Cox), all coming together to stand against the mysterious cult group known as The Hand which operates in the shadows under the supervision of Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver).
Nonetheless, considering the success of both seasons of Daredevil and single seasons of Jessica Jones, Luke cage and Iron fist, we can safely assume a huge success for The Defenders’ 8-episode long premiere season…Make this happen Marvel!
According to The Wrap, S.J Clarkson, who happens to have directed the first two episodes of The Defenders, briefly explained why the show’s heroes won’t begin the show together as a team but rather on an individual basis away from each other. In her own words;
“My hope is that people who haven’t seen any of the shows might tune in and watch “The Defenders,” and enjoy it in its own right. Well, I actually think there’s no rush for those people because they don’t know them. So you want time to sort of reintroduce the characters and sort of spend time with them, to really understand who they are, understand where they’re at, so when they do finally meet I think the payoff is greater cause you’ve had time to sit with them and settle in where they are.”
“I wanted it to feel like as if when you watch it, you were being introduced to these characters for the first time but equally, if you were familiar with them, you were sitting back down with an old friend.”
Evidently, from her statement with The Wrap, the heroes would definitely be reintroduced in their different elements and integrated together has the series progresses. So if for some absurd reason, you ever had any nerd fantasies of seeing Luke Cage beat the crap out of Danny Rand aka Iron Fist among other things, there is still a possibility your dreams might come true. But for now, lets all stay satisfied with the reasons as to why Marvel’s Defenders won’t meet in the first episode.
